Midsummer Festival
Thursday 29 June 2006

It’s midsummer here with temperatures soaring into the mid to high teens. To celebrate, the city is having a festival with several theatre and event companies building on the success (or otherwise) of last year’s Capital of Culture. There’s a lot going on from large scale concerts to small intimate events.

The Spiegeltent is back. It’s a gaudy, rococo style temporary edifice which made a perfect setting for the Threepenny Opera last night. Last weekend we went to see an outdoor production of The Tempest, staged on a real island in the middle of the duck-pond in Fitzgerald park. It was a fantastic show, in every sense of the word. Great sound, lighting, pyrotechnics and music. I think Shakespeare would have approved although at least one of the resident ducks clearly did not.
